Maybe it’s my background as a schoolteacher or maybe it’s from my love of school as a child- but whatever it is I LOVE BACK TO SCHOOL time! Ever since Evie started preschool we have been doing some fun & creative back to school traditions!
I think that traditions are so fun and give you something to look forward to! Whenever I have something to look forward to I feel like even if I’m nervous or worried, I am able to calm those feelings with excitement as well! Which is why we created some fun back to school traditions! Back to school is not always an exciting thing for kids. Some kids get really nervous and that’s perfectly normal! I have listed all our back to school traditions below.
1. Pirate Week
Pirate week is SO MUCH FUN! We do pirate week the week before school starts. We do one small “pirate” activity every day and at the end of the week our pirate named “One Eyed Willy” brings us some fun school supplies, school clothes, etc. But we have to go on a pirate treasure hunt around our neighborhood to find the treasure! I have gone into some more detail of exactly what we do every day over on my Instagram in a highlight bubble labeled “Traditions”. It is so much fun, and you can make it as elaborate or as simple as you want!
2. Back To School Haircuts
Not only do haircuts make your hair easier to do in the morning (especially little ones with curly or easily tangled hair), but it is also a great way to feel like you have a fresh start! We get our haircut at Great Clips, my husband has been getting his haircut there for years- and we love it! They always have our haircut information saved in their Clip Notes system, so they can look up exactly what haircut you got last time and do the same thing or change it a bit. It’s so convenient! You can also check in for your haircut on the Great Clips app or online and opt in to receive ReadyNext text alerts, so you know exactly when to head into the salon and don’t have to wait in line. This time we visited the Cedar Hills Town Center salon in Cedar Hills, UT. I loved how clean and sanitized the whole salon was- we all felt very comfortable and protected!
3. Individual Back to School Shopping
Back to school shopping with each child individually is a game changer. I love that you get good one-on-one time with each child and they get to feel like they can choose things they really love for their back to school style!
4. Back to School Organization
About two weeks before school starts we get ourselves organized. Summertime is fun but also chaotic, and the change in routine makes it so our house gets a little unorganized. I think through our school routine and any other activities that start in the fall (for us that’s dance and soccer), and I make sure we have our dance and soccer bins organized, our hair bins organized, our shoes and clothes switched out to things that fit and that are still in good condition, etc. As the year goes on things will absolutely get unorganized again but at least when you start off the year you feel settled and ready to go!
5. Father’s Blessing
In our religion, worthy men have the opportunity to hold the priesthood (you can read more about that here). As I was growing up my dad always gave my brothers and me a priesthood blessing the night before school started every year. So now before school starts my husband does the same thing. It’s a very special blessing and brings much peace and comfort to my children and to myself.
There you have it! I love our back to school traditions and I hope that you find them helpful too! Please let me know what questions you have in the comments below!
